The Dark Side of Florence

Update on the last day in Florence

As I’ve reviewed my posts from the trip, I realized that I never added information about the Dark Side of Florence tour. Prior to our arrival in Florence, we had booked a tour with Fadi Bassil ( Our friends, John and Rob from Toronto had recommended Fadi. What a day it was! We booked “The Dark Side of Florence” and enjoyed every minute with Fadi. In fact, Fadi advertised the tour as a journey into the rivalry between the Medicis and the Pazzis. Here’s Fadi with us at San Miniato al Monte.

First, we went to the Strozzi Palace.

We then went to Santa Maria Novella and toured the surrounding area. This area is where the Pazzis thrived.

Fadi next took us to a remote part of Florence and we wondered why we were going there. Fadi had arranged for a small, yes very small, rental car – it was parked on the street in a residential area of Florence. We got in, Fadi via his iPhone rented the car and off we went. He took us to Piazzale Michelangelo on the other side of the Arno River. The ride was amazing – fast and furious over narrow streets, up and down the cobblestones where Fadi used to live. Here are the views from the Piazzale, the cemetery behind the cathedral, and Franco Zefferilli’s tomb (he was recently buried there).

Then it was back to Florence to visit Fadi’s apartment – can you believe that view?

We then began our tour of the Palazzo Vecchio – so very interesting. We went into the small doorways that were secret entrances at the time – climbed so many steps – and then arrived at the main exhibition room. The movie, “Inferno”, uses the Palazzo as its main film location and we visited all of the key areas – including the timbers above the ceiling constructed to hold the heavy art pieces below.

And so we ended our 4 days in Florence with a very memorable tour.
